GENERAL NEWS

 

REMINDER:  Students when you arrive on campus DO NOT SIT IN YOUR VEHICLES. Students are to come into the building and not gather in the parking lot!

 

Project Graduation will meet Sunday, April 7th at the PHS Cafeteria to finalize plans and work rotations for the Jammin' in the Jungle tournament April 13th & 14th.  We need help from seniors/parents and or family members to run this tournament smoothly. If you are unable to attend please sign up for a shift on the Facebook Page "Pocahontas Class of 2019 Project Graduation".   We are needing drink donations to keep costs down!  Cases of water, can sodas (Coke, Dt. Coke, Mt. Dew, Dr. Pepper, Dt. Pepper, Pepsi) and Gatorade (grape, blue, red) are needed.  We will start taking donations immediately and they can be dropped off in the high school office or Mrs. Inman's room. Thank you in advance.

Seniors…… The Project Graduation agreement is out by the bulletin board across from the office!  These must be returned to Mrs. Dianna no later than May 10th and the sooner the better please! We need each senior to fill one out regardless of whether or not you are attending so that we can get a t-shirt size.

Seniors....There is also a card to fill out for Senior walk. Those need to be turned in to Mrs. Baty or Mrs. Edie Hall by April 12th. We do not need to know who you will be walking with. Also a reminder, pictures must be turned in (or emailed) by March 31st.

 

Any Junior or Senior attending Prom..... if you are bringing a guest who DOES NOT ATTEND POCAHONTAS HIGH SCHOOL, you will need to fill out a Prom Guest Registration form. Those are located in the basket across from the office. The deadline to turn those in are April 12th as well.

 

Attention 10th and 11th grade girls, you can now apply for Girls Who Code’s FREE Summer Immersion Program!  Email Mrs. Phelps for more information.

Flyers for students and parents

 

They have extended the sale of prom t-shirts through next Tuesday. They will be available to purchase during lunch in the concession stand area.  Shirts are $12 and you can choose from navy blue or black. You can also bring your money to the office and leave with Mrs. Dianna if you are not on campus during lunch. Don't miss out on the keepsake of Prom!

 

The Business Expo/Job Fair at BRTC is April 11th from 1:30 - 2:30.  In the past we have taken any FBLA Senior that wants to attend.  We would leave school at 11:30 and return around 2:45. We will go eat somewhere in town at 11:30, arrive at BRTC at 1:30.  The expo is booths set up by businesses in our community to advertise job openings/career opportunities within their business. They usually have freebies you can pick up as you go from booth to booth. Please let Mrs. Blalock know by Friday if you can attend!

 

St. Bernard's is now accepting applications for this summer's Jr. Volunteer Program. The program allows students (ages 15 – 18) an opportunity to volunteer in a hospital setting where they will explore careers and gain experience in helping others. Participants will gain hands on experience in surgery, laboratory, nursing, radiology, rehabilitative services, exercise science, pharmacy and more! It will be a three-week session where we will accept 16 students into the program. The session will be held from July 12-August 2. *Remember, all High School students that are 15-18 years of age are eligible to apply.

PHS Relay for Life Team!

 

Money collected so far:

Seniors: $70.05

Juniors: $17.32

Sophomores: $15.25

 

Select teachers have jars set up in their classroom to collect change for the Relay for Life.  Like last year, the class that collects the most change between now and April 30th will win a free soda and snack! If you do not have a teacher with a jar in their room, you can put your change in your class jar in the office or library.  We all know someone who is battling cancer or who has lost their fight to cancer. Let’s all come together and help raise money for this great cause!

 

The nurse will begin conducting BMI screenings on 10th grade students during the next few weeks. If you do not want your child to be weighed and measured, you must send a written note to school for the child's file.  If you have any questions, contact the school nurse.

 

A-State is hosting an AP Prep Boot Camp July 9-12 for Chemistry, Calculus, Biology and English Language. Anyone taking these classes next year are encouraged to attend. There is no charge. Breakfast, snacks, and lunch are provided. Door prizes will be awarded as well. Registration deadline is March 30. For more information, see Mrs. Kercheval.

 

Seniors--- Please start choosing your pictures that you want on the Senior slide show and email them to Info@jettslanding.com. Please put your first and last name in the subject line. You may choose up to ten pictures (from birth to present day) to put on your personal page. You may also send group pictures (friends, sports, band, clubs, kindergarten, etc.). If you are unable to email them, please take the pictures to Mrs. Baty. They MUST be in an envelope with your name on it. Deadline is March 31st.

The Smoke Signal is looking for topics to cover in upcoming editions.  We would love to have pictures and information about what PHS Clubs are doing, trips our students take over breaks, or any other information you would like to see in our PHS Smoke Signal.  Please email crystal.blalock@pocahontaspsd.com or speak with on of the Smoke Signal Staff. PHS Clothing closet has coats and new shoes for use… Visit the closet if you have any clothing needs and take what you need.  Prom dresses are also available! Please leave it organized :)

Reminder: Please remember once a student has reached 6 absences in any given class period that a parent note will not excuse that absence. After 6 absences, the only notes that excuse students are doctor notes, death or serious injury in the immediate family, an appt with government agency, participation in FFA, FHA, or 4H activities, or exceptional circumstances with prior approval of the principal/assistant principal. Please also remember excuse notes must be presented to the office within 5 days of returning to school. Notes presented more that 5 days may not be accepted. Notes should be turned into the office first thing in the morning, (for more

details see page 27/28  of the District Pupil Policies handbook.)

Lyon College Upward Bound Math-Science Program

(All expenses are covered through funding from the U.S. Department of Education.)

The Upward Bound Math-Science Program (UBMS) works with eligible high school students to achieve the academic the preparation, motivation and confidence needed to complete high school and successfully pursue postsecondary programs, especially in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field. The Program serves students from low-income families and/or where neither parent holds a bachelor's degree.

UBMS is especially interested in helping students recognize and develop their potential to excel in the fields of math and science and pursue postsecondary degrees in these fields. The Program hosts both a Residential Summer Session and an Academic Year Session. Students participate in a five week (six weeks for rising seniors) residential Summer Session and also commit to attending at least two Saturday Session during the academic year.

  • Be a 9th, 10th, or 11th grade student during 2018-2019

  • Be from a family where neither parent has a four year college degree or higher - OR - Is a low-income individual as defined in the guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Education.

Arkansas Rice Reps Program (for Juniors/Class of 2020)

From April through September, Reps actively participate in a

program designed to teach them about rice farming and the

importance of this crop around the world through education and

volunteerism. Reps can apply for four scholarships.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY:

  • Both males and females may apply

  • Current Junior or rising Senior in high school

  • Any county in Arkansas may participate

  • Ag background not required

REP REQUIREMENTS

  • Post on social media 2 times/month using #ARRiceReps19

  • Materials will be provided for optional reference

  • Participate in a minimum of 2 on-site experiences offered by Arkansas Rice

  • Submit the scholarship form by August 23,

         2019 Congressional Art Competition (open to grades 9-12)

       Each spring, the Congressional Art competition (CAC), sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives, recognizes and encourages the artistic talent of high-school students throughout Arkansas' 1st Congressional District. The "Best-in-show" winning piece will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol, and its student artist will receive an invitation to travel to Washington D.C. to attend the national CAC winners' reception with paid airfare for two. The other winners' artwork will be displayed in Congressman Crawford's district offices. (Please see your student e-mail or Mrs. Hampton for a flyer with more information.)

2019 Student-View Scholarship Program

The Student-View Scholarship is a unique opportunity for high school seniors. It is open to all students regardless of academic achievement or financial need.  Visit www.student-view.com.  

Student Insights will award the following prizes:

  • One (1) individual prize of a $4,000 scholarship.

  • Two (2) individual prize of a $1,000 scholarship.

  • Ten (10) individual prizes, consisting of $500 scholarships each

   

SENIORS:  NEXT STEPS FOR COLLEGE

.  * Please do NOT use your PHS student e-mail address for ACT, FAFSA, YOUniversal, college applications, etc.  You will not have access to it after you graduate.

 

  1. (ONLINE) Complete FAFSA - If you are considering going to college, you must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid) form online @  https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/ (You may pick up a FAFSA ID Worksheet from Mrs. Stewart or Mrs. Hampton to record your login information. You WILL need this every year.)  

  2. (ONLINE) Complete YOUniversal Scholarship - Complete the YOUniversal Scholarship application online @ https://www.ark.org/adhe_financialaid (to qualify for the Academic Challenge Scholarship)

  3. (ONLINE) Apply to Colleges – Complete online applications as an incoming, undergraduate freshman for any potential colleges you are considering attending

(Some colleges charge an application fee.  If you receive free/reduced lunches, you may be able

to obtain a fee waiver.  See Mrs. Hampton for more information.)

  1. (COUNSELOR) Submit Transcript Request – Obtain a transcript request form (list all colleges for which you completed an online application) from Mrs. Hampton or Mrs. Stewart, and return it to Mrs. Hampton.  

(This allows your listed colleges to receive your official transcript and ACT scores. You may also

need to complete a shot-record release form with Mrs. Gholson.)

  1. (ONLINE) Check Regularly – Make sure you check your email, FAFSA account, YOUniversal account, and college application accounts for any messages or tasks that still need to be completed.  You will have to ‘accept’ financial aid awards. WATCH DEADLINES!

 

CONCURRENT CREDIT/BRTC COURSES

Online Courses through BRTC - If you wish to take an online course

through BRTC, you must have a period in your PHS schedule to complete

the course work in the computer lab/study hall.  You will be counted absent if

you do not attend that class every day, just as your other PHS classes.

 

Dual Credit Courses (on BRTC Campus) - These courses must be pre-

approved by Mrs. Hampton.  If you wish to take a course on the BRTC

campus during the school day, you must provide the days and times the

course meets and have it pre-approved by Mrs. Hampton.  If the course will

not allow you to have 6 credit-classes in your PHS schedule per day, you will

not be approved to take the course.

 

ACT INFORMATION

If you are in 11th or 12th grade and receive free or reduced lunches, see Mrs. Hampton for one

If you are planning to take a College Day, please remember you must not have exceeded the

allowable absences in a semester and you will need to get a form from the office prior to the

visit. The student must meet with the school counselor and have the form signed by the

counselor and a parent; then turn into the office the day before visit. The student must provide

written verification of the visit to the office upon returning to school.

Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies summer program (in California) is now accepting applications for various summer residential camps/institutes in arts, humanities, science, and math for students in grades 8 and up. Deadlines to apply are approaching quickly. Admission is very competitive, and there is limited financial aid available. For more information, visit  https://spcs.stanford.edu/programs

Hey guys! Are you 18 years old? Have you registered with Selective Service?  Selective service isn't the draft. There is no draft and hasn't been for nearly 40 years.  Selective Service is important for our country, and it's the law! It's adding your name to a database to be used only in a national emergency.  By registering, you stay eligible for college loans, job training, jobs with the government, citizenship for male immigrants, and a driver's license in most states.  It only takes 2 minutes, and you can register online.
