-GENERAL NEWS-

Reminder:  Students are not allowed to bring knives to school. 

IMPORTANT REMINDER:  State law prohibits all motorists from using a cell phone while in a school zone or passing a school building when children are present. The law prohibits both talking and texting while driving in those areas. School zones encompass each building campus and parking area as well as the road in front of and extending well beyond school building campuses in the upcoming weeks. 

The Clothing Closet is in need of clothing for younger children.  If you have any child clothing you would like to donate please get in touch with Amy Lynch or a member of the closing closet. Thank you! 

Students in grades 6-12 that are interested in shooting sports we have sign up sheets in the office for the Arkansas Youth Shooting Sports Program.  Sign up forms will not be accepted after March 1st.  For more information or if you have any questions please contact Desiree Bailey at desiree.bailey@pocahontaspsd.com 

 

Girls Go CyberStart Initiative - Registration Open

Open to female high school students, the Girls Go CyberStart initiative encourages participants to explore their interests in cyber studies, learn core cybersecurity skills, and build confidence in problem-solving.

Girls Go CyberStart is a free, online game open to all female students in grades 9 through 12, regardless of their prior knowledge or experience with cybersecurity and information technology. Playing alone or on teams, participants solve challenges to gain points and advance through levels, earning prizes along the way. In addition to individual prizes, such as trips, gift certificates, and computers, the three in-state schools with the most participants win monetary prizes. https://go.joincyberstart.com/

 

 

-SENIOR NEWS-    

Seniors are needed to collect items at Walmart Saturday, March 14th. Items will be used for the "Jammin in the Jungle" event concession stands. Please sign up on Mrs. Steimel's door.  

 

Seniors if you got tickets for Zac & Emily concert that will be held March 7th, please return money or tickets to Mrs. Steimel ASAP.  A list of students and ticket numbers will be posted on the door.    

 

Project Graduation will be hosting a concert by Zack DeClerk & Emily Weisenbach at BRTC on March 7th, 2020. Seniors: If students checked out tickets from Mrs. Steimel, they must return tickets and/or money as soon as possible so other students have the opportunity to sell

 

Next Project Graduation Meeting is Tuesday, March 10 @ 5:30 in the Student Center

Seniors, if you have any kind of disability (learning, physical, emotional, etc.,) you may qualify for assistance through Arkansas Rehabilitation Services (ARS.)  Their mission is to prepare Arkansans with disabilities to work and lead productive and independent lives through a variety of services. Please let Mrs. Hampton know if you would like to visit with her to find out more and if you qualify.

 

Project Graduation is organized by the parents and the students of the graduating class. If you plan to graduate in May of 2020, we encourage you to participate by attending some or all meetings and events. You will receive incentive points.

 

Senior NHS members need to check the list on the wall across from Mrs. Steimel's room to verify their membership status and the spelling of their name.  This is very important so that they are correctly called during senior night at the end of the year!!

 

SENIORS: Do you have 9 weeks of perfect attendance?  If so, check your school email for more information from Mrs. Hampton about the Cavenaugh Attend to Win event.  Cavenaugh Kia will be giving away another new 2020 Kia Soul to a high school senior from Northeast Arkansas on April 3rd

 

Pictures for the senior slideshow need to be turned in to the email below by April 1.  Seniors are allowed up to 10 pictures. If you need to scan pictures and do not have a way to do so, Mrs. Blalock has offered to assist you.  We will not take any hard copies of the pictures. You will have to scan them in. Make sure your first and last name are in the subject line. Also, if you have group pictures from various activities throughout your school years. You may also send them-just note that on the email.

-CLUB NEWS-

A/V Club: PHS and PJHS are starting an A/V Club.  In this club you will be streaming events that happen on and off campus, sporting events, and a whole lot more.  If you are interested in joining the A/V club, please check your email or fill out this form

Esports: "Redskin Esports is looking for a Streamer/Video Content Producer and a Social Media Specialist to join our program. Two separate positions. Must be punctual, reliable, and dedicated. Must be available Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:30pm - 6pm. Experience preferred. Will conduct lunch interviews. To apply or request additional information, email redskin.esports@pocahontaspsd.com 

PALSS: Reminder that PALSS meets each Thursday at noon, in the student center.  We are accepting new members at any time.  (This is the former “Circle of Friends”)

FBLA State Conference Attendees:  FBLA Online testing will be March 10th, 2020 during 1st hour in Mrs. Debbie Hall's Room. 

NHS: Next week, NHS officers will meet with all NHS members by grade. Members of NHS from each grade will meet in Mrs. Murray's room on the day listed by their grade. This is a required meeting for ALL members. If you are unable to attend, please see Mrs. Murray or Mrs. Steimel.

ONLINE BULLYING REPORT FORM - Students, parents, and staff members can now complete an online bullying report form to report alleged bullying or harassment that occurred on school property; at school-sponsored activity/event off school property; on a school bus; or through social media, text messages, or email in the current school year by clicking this link or by visiting the districts website.

Mrs. Stewart’s Career Coach Google Classroom has been updated with current  opportunities and scholarships. Check your class folder to see what is offered for your current grade. These will be updated on a regular basis.

- Remember, Jr. 's & Sr's can get up to 2 (3 credit) concurrent credit courses covered each semester by the Concurrent Challenge Scholarship at BRTC. (This is completely different than (and will not affect) the AR Academic Challenge Scholarship.  

- If you receive free or reduced lunches, you could also get up to 6 credits covered by the school district.  Ask Mrs. Hampton about this!

 

Test Prep-

1.) 2019-2020 Preparing for the ACT Test booklets - free in Mrs. Hampton's office! The booklet contains general information about the ACT tests and practice tests with answers for each subject section.

2.) Chromebook App - Before logging into a Chromebook, click on Apps at the bottom of your screen. Select TestNav.  You may need to “select a different customer” to switch to the ACT login page. No login is needed. On the login page, click on Practice Test. There are timed and untimed practice sessions.

 

Photo ID - If you do not have a photo ID, see Mrs. Hampton for an ACT ID form. They will not admit you to your ACT session without your ACT test ticket AND either a photo ID or the ACT ID form.

 

FUTURE AGENTS IN TRAINING (FAIT) is a relatively new program initiated to provide exposure of FBI investigative experiences to young motivated minds.The FAIT program is a gateway into a future with the FBI.  The course is held in Fort Smith, Arkansas, usually on three consecutive Fridays in April. Students who are at least 16 years of age and have not graduated high school yet are eligible to attend. See Mrs. Stewart or Mrs. Hampton for an application.

 

JUNIOR SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY!

Current high school juniors graduating in 2021 are eligible to apply for a modern scholarship opportunity and win up to $15,000 towards higher education. Arkansas Rice's "Rice Reps" is a five month program to help educate students about the rice industry while equipping them to act as advocates in their communities and on social media.  Ag background is not required. Apply at https://www.arkansasrice.org/rice-reps.com Deadline is March 20th.

 

Applications are now available for the St. Bernards Jr. Volunteer Summer Program. The program allows students (ages 15 – 18) an opportunity to volunteer in a hospital setting where they will explore careers and gain experience in helping others. Participants will gain hands on experience in surgery, laboratory, nursing, radiology, rehabilitative services, exercise science, pharmacy and more! It will be a three-week session where we will accept 16 students into the program. The session will be held from July 10-July 31. You can download the application packet by clicking here or pick one up from Mrs. Stewart. Please note that the deadline for applying is Friday, April 17.

 

The BRTC MASH camp date has been set for June 8th - 18th.  Students must be currently in the 10th or 11th grade to apply.  Applicants will be selected based on GPA, an essay describing their desire to attend M*A*S*H, recommendation letters, extracurricular activities and community service, as well as awards and accomplishments.  Those selected into the program will shadow in a variety of health care locations, learn medical terminology, take part in hands on activities to learn medical procedures, tour local hospitals and learn more about the opportunities in our area!  See Mrs. Stewart or Mrs. Hampton for applications. 

 

To celebrate Law Day on May 1, 2020, all high school students across Arkansas have the opportunity to enter the 2nd Annual Spend a Day with a Judge contest. To enter the contest, students will either write an essay or draw a courtroom drawing (at the mock trial competition).  (Check your email for entry form and more information.)

 

FREE ACT WORKSHOP EVENT (9th-12th)

Deadline to register:  Thursday, March 5, 2020

First Baptist Church Kitchen St. in Jonesboro will be hosting an ACT Workshop Event March 7th 9AM-1PM @ 700 Kitchen Street Jonesboro, AR 72401.  All high school students 9th-12th grades are invited, especially if you haven’t taken the ACT! 

 

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY (Must attend the ACT Workshop Event)

Graduating SENIORS 2020!!!! Mu Omicron Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. & Kappa Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will be sponsoring four $250.00 scholarships.

Requirements:

1. Must be 2020 graduating senior

2. Must have 2.75 GPA

3. One letter of recommendation

4. 500 words or more essay required!

2020 Congressional Art Competition (Check your email for more details.)

Deadline:  Monday, April 13, 2020

Grades: 9th-12th

10 Finalists will be chosen from each medium category and a 1st-3rd place in each category. 1st place winners' art will be displayed at Regions Bank in Jonesboro.

Public online voting will be April 20th-24th.  

Grand Prize: Overall winner's artwork will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol, and its student artist will receive airfare for two to attend Congressional Art Competition reception in D.C. with other national winners.
