GENERAL NEWS

 

St. Bernard's is now accepting applications for this summer's Jr. Volunteer Program. The program allows students (ages 15 – 18) an opportunity to volunteer in a hospital setting where they will explore careers and gain experience in helping others. Participants will gain hands on experience in surgery, laboratory, nursing, radiology, rehabilitative services, exercise science, pharmacy and more! It will be a three-week session where we will accept 16 students into the program. The session will be held from July 12-August 2. *Remember, all High School students that are 15-18 years of age are eligible to apply.

PHS Relay for Life Team!

Select teachers have jars set up in their classroom to collect change for the Relay for Life.  Like last year, the class that collects the most change between now and April 30th will win a free soda and snack! If you do not have a teacher with a jar in their room, you can put your change in your class jar in the office.  We all know someone who is battling cancer or who has lost their fight to cancer. Let’s all come together and help raise money for this great cause!

 

The nurse will begin conducting BMI screenings on 10th grade students during the next few weeks. If you do not want your child to be weighed and measured, you must send a written note to school for the child's file.  If you have any questions, contact the school nurse.

 

Ready, Set, Graduate!

Do you have the skills it takes to make it on your own after graduation?  If so, come challenge those skills at the “Mall of Life” for a chance to win money and several different door prizes.  If not, come learn how to manage your money and survive after high school.

This program will take place on Friday, March 15th at BRTC.  We will leave around 8:00 am and return back to school around 2:45 pm. Ready, Set, Graduate is a program developed specifically for seniors. During this program students will choose a career that best fits them.  Students will be put into groups and will attend three short classes discussing finances such as banking, owning a home, and insurance. Lunch will be provided for all students who attend. You will have a choice between a taco bar or fish with drinks and dessert.  After lunch, students will attend the “Mall of Life,” which is made up of different businesses in our community. Students will be given a card with items listed that they have to purchase. Students will go to each business and purchase an item of their choice such as a car and a house.  At the end of the program, the students will budget using the given income from their chosen career and the items they purchased in the “Mall of Life.” This is a fun and interacting program and I encourage all of you to attend!  Sign up with Mrs. Casillas or Mrs. Baltz.  Deadline to sign up is March 6th.

 

A-State is hosting an AP Prep Boot Camp July 9-12 for Chemistry, Calculus, Biology and English Language. Anyone taking these classes next year are encouraged to attend. There is no charge. Breakfast, snacks, and lunch are provided. Door prizes will be awarded as well. Registration deadline is March 30. For more information, see Mrs. Kercheval .

 

Seniors--- Please start choosing your pictures that you want on the Senior slide show and email them to Info@jettslanding.com. Please put your first and last name in the subject line. You may choose up to ten pictures (from birth to present day) to put on your personal page. You may also send group pictures (friends, sports, band, clubs, kindergarten, etc.). If you are unable to email them, please take the pictures to Mrs. Baty. They MUST be in an envelope with your name on it.

PHS Clothing closet has coats and new shoes for use… Visit the closet if you have any clothing needs and take what you need.  Prom dresses are also available! Please leave it organized :)

Reminder: Please remember once a student has reached 6 absences in any given class period that a parent note will not excuse that absence. After 6 absences, the only notes that excuse students are doctor notes, death or serious injury in the immediate family, an appt with government agency, participation in FFA, FHA, or 4H activities, or exceptional circumstances with prior approval of the principal/assistant principal. Please also remember excuse notes must be presented to the office within 5 days of returning to school. Notes presented more that 5 days may not be accepted. Notes should be turned into the office first thing in the morning, (for more

Administered by a consortium led by the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, YLS is a free, four-day,overnight college empowerment conference for top-performing, Pell Grant—eligible, high school juniors. It's designed to give a diverse group of students the tools to successfully apply to top universities, have full access to financial aid opportunities, and set a course for success. My Favorite Teacher Contest for 9th-12th grade students. Students write an essay, poem, or thank-you letter (500 words or less, and submit it online at the website below) sharing how a teacher has influenced their life and why they appreciate and admire them. The winning student will receive $100 Barnes & Noble gift card. The winning "Teacher of the Year" will receive $5,000 and will be recognized at a special event at a Barnes & Noble store. 2019 Filmmaking Lab for Teen Girls (11th grade)

In partnership with the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas - Girls of Promise Initiative and JM Associates, the Arkansas Cinema Society presents the Filmmaking Lab for Teen Girls. This lab is for high school junior girls who dream of following in the footsteps of Ruth Carter, Kathryn Bigelow, Sally Menke, Reed Morano, and other female directors, cinematographers, costume designers, editors and screenwriters.

This lab will provide an opportunity for high-school junior girls between the ages of 16-18 to experience all aspects of the filmmaking process, from screenwriting to production to editing. No prior filmmaking experience is necessary and the lab is FREE. Guided by seasoned filmmakers the participants will develop a 3-5 minute short film with an emphasis on women’s empowerment and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) over the course of the eight-week program.The finished short films will be screened at the end of the program and during ACS’s annual FILMLAND in August.

The Summer Seminar program enrollment is now open for students entering the 12th grade who are interested in attending the USNA or any service academy. This week-long event will give students a taste of the academic and athletic programs offered at the USNA.

2019 Student-View Scholarship Program

The Student-View Scholarship is a unique opportunity for high school seniors. It is open to all students regardless of academic achievement or financial need.  Visit www.student-view.com.

  2. (ONLINE) Complete YOUniversal Scholarship - Complete the YOUniversal Scholarship application online @ https://www.ark.org/adhe_financialaid (to qualify for the Academic Challenge Scholarship)

  3. (ONLINE) Apply to Colleges – Complete online applications as an incoming, undergraduate freshman for any potential colleges you are considering attending

(Some colleges charge an application fee.  If you receive free/reduced lunches, you may be able

to obtain a fee waiver.  See Mrs. Hampton for more information.)

  1. (COUNSELOR) Submit Transcript Request – Obtain a transcript request form (list all colleges for which you completed an online application) from Mrs. Hampton or Mrs. Stewart, and return it to Mrs. Hampton.  

(This allows your listed colleges to receive your official transcript and ACT scores. You may also

need to complete a shot-record release form with Mrs. Gholson.)

  1. (ONLINE) Check Regularly – Make sure you check your email, FAFSA account, YOUniversal account, and college application accounts for any messages or tasks that still need to be completed.  You will have to ‘accept’ financial aid awards. WATCH DEADLINES!

 

CONCURRENT CREDIT/BRTC COURSES

Online Courses through BRTC - If you wish to take an online course

through BRTC, you must have a period in your PHS schedule to complete

the course work in the computer lab/study hall.  You will be counted absent if

you do not attend that class every day, just as your other PHS classes.

 

Dual Credit Courses (on BRTC Campus) - These courses must be pre-

approved by Mrs. Hampton.  If you wish to take a course on the BRTC

campus during the school day, you must provide the days and times the

course meets and have it pre-approved by Mrs. Hampton.  If the course will

not allow you to have 6 credit-classes in your PHS schedule per day, you will

not be approved to take the course.

 

ACT INFORMATION

If you are in 11th or 12th grade and receive free or reduced lunches, see Mrs. Hampton for one

written verification of the visit to the office upon returning to school.

Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies summer program (in California) is now accepting applications for various summer residential camps/institutes in arts, humanities, science, and math for students in grades 8 and up. Hey guys! Are you 18 years old? Have you registered with Selective Service?  Selective service isn't the draft. There is no draft and hasn't been for nearly 40 years.  Selective Service is important for our country, and it's the law! It's adding your name to a database to be used only in a national emergency.  By registering, you stay eligible for college loans, job training, jobs with the government, citizenship for male immigrants, and a driver's license in most states.  It only takes 2 minutes, and you can register online.
