🏫 You’re Invited: High School Tour Night 🏫
The Pocahontas School District invites our community to join us for a Public High School Tour on Monday, October 27, 2025, from 6:00–7:00 p.m.

This will be a drop-in style event, so feel free to come by anytime during that hour. Tour our current facilities, ask questions, and see firsthand the spaces where our students learn, grow, and lead each day.

We value transparency and community partnership — this tour is a great opportunity to learn more about our high school and the needs driving future facility planning.

When people think of a new school gym, they often think only of games and practices. But here in Pocahontas, our gym will be so much more than that.

Every year, between 9,100 and 10,300 students should fill that space — not for sports, but for the moments that truly define their school experience. It’s where we would celebrate achievements, gather for assemblies, sing and play in concerts, cheer at pep rallies, and watch seniors cross the stage at graduation. It’s where our students come together to belong.

Currently, our students’ choices are limited and experiences like senior awards, the athletic banquet and even prom are held at the elementary school. A new gym isn’t just about new floors or seats - it’s about belonging. It’s about giving our students and families a safe, welcoming space to create memories that last far beyond the final bell.

This 2025 proposal is more focused — with a smaller millage increase, less state funding, and higher construction costs than in previous years.

It reflects today’s financial realities while maintaining our commitment to facilities that meet student needs — including Redskin Assembly Hall, a new gymnasium, and updated academic spaces that ensure safety and opportunity for every student.

Because our community’s strength begins in our schools.

If inclement weather is forecasted for Friday, October 24, Coronation will be held in the High School Gymnasium. 8 tickets will be given to maids and senior football players to give to family members if we have to move Coronation inside. In this event, a livestream will be made available via our Social Media platform so that those who cannot be in attendance can participate in the ceremony. We do ask that those in attendance of the ceremony exit campus in a timely manner once the ceremony concludes in an effort to avoid a traffic jam with our parade immediately following the Coronation ceremony. Parade Immediately following Coronation we will begin the Parade. This should last from approximately 1:30 PM - 2:15 PM. The parade will start on the east side of campus between the softball and baseball fields. Like last year, the parade will now proceed to Thomasville and head west to Pocahontas Elementary school first. Once it goes through the Elementary School, they will return to the main campus and turn left at the stop light by McNabb’s. They will move through the horseshoe at MD Williams and PJHS and then proceed back to their original starting location between the baseball and softball fields from the beginning of the parade in order to park for the Pep Rally that will follow the parade. Traffic will be stopped at the appropriate locations during the transition between campuses on Thomasville. *In the event of inclement weather on Friday, October 24, the parade will be canceled. Pep Rally A short pep rally will be held for students immediately following the parade. Students who are able to drive will be dismissed immediately following the pep rally’s conclusion. Those who ride a bus will return to their scheduled class until the final bell. Coronation Before the Game The Coronation ceremony before the game will begin at 6:30 PM on the football field. Maids and their guardian escorts will meet in the student center at 5:45 PM on Friday, October 24.
Our PHS football players spent the morning greeting M.D. Williams students — opening doors, giving high-fives, and spreading Redskin spirit all around!

Even Superintendent Dr. Arbuckle joined in on the fun! 🙌
What an awesome way to kick off the day — big thanks to our players for showing leadership, kindness, and school pride!

How School Construction Funding Really Works
Community members have asked important questions about how school construction is funded and why districts don’t simply “save up” for large projects.

These informational pieces outline the basic structure of school facility funding — including how local building funds, state partnership funds, and long-term bonds work together — and why rising construction costs make long-term saving alone challenging.

Our goal is to help the community understand how the facility funding mechanism works, not to advocate for or against any specific millage change. We appreciate your engagement and welcome your questions as we continue planning responsibly for the future of our schools.

What a match! 🎾
Kate Kazzee and Libby Rawls played their hearts out in a two-hour match against Warren that went down to the wire, falling just short 5–7 in both games. They finish as one of the top 16 4A teams in the state and ranked 6th in the tournament — an incredible accomplishment!

Did you know? 📊
Pocahontas School District currently has one of the lowest millage rates among surrounding districts.

Even with the proposed millage increase, our rate would remain competitive with neighboring schools while allowing us to build safer, more modern learning environments for our students.

An investment in education is an investment in our community’s future.
